Summer Associate Program: Parenthood Project

Project Description:

Community Legal Aid believes that parents have a critical role to play in raising and supporting their children. Our Parenthood Project is dedicated to reducing disparities in visitation for noncustodial parents, especially for Black fathers, through legal education, support, and direct representation.


Acrtivities for the role:

The Parenthood Project summer associate will be assigned an attorney with an ongoing caseload and will have direct interaction with clients and will gain valuable litigation experience. The summer associate will support the project and can expect to engage in the following activities:

  • Conduct screening and client interviews with clients seeking to obtain or enforce parenting time orders

  • Conduct factual investigations including client interviews, requesting and reviewing court, medical, and other records, searching public records, etc.

  • Attend hearings, trial preparation meetings, trials and outreach events

  • Conduct legal research

  • Draft pleadings / research memoranda / correspondence

  • Such other tasks as may be assigned

  • Other duties as assigned


Preferred qualifications:

The strongest candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest in and sensitivity to the legal needs of the poor as well as motivation to improve the condition of the poor

  • Strong research/writing background

  • Strong interest for students with their Intern Certificate

  • Strong research/writing skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and legal and internet research tools

  • Ability to speak a foreign language is highly desirable
