Legal Aid expands presence in Wayne County

Wayne County residents facing legal issues related to housing, debt, domestic violence and other civil matters, have an additional way to get help. Community Legal Aid now is holding office hours on Wednesdays from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. at Community Action’s Wooster location.

Steven McGarrity, executive director at Legal Aid, shared that the nonprofit law firm has been exploring ways to make it easier for residents to seek help, given the organization’s limited resources. A partnership with Community Action has paved the way for Legal Aid staff to connect with members of the community who need their services.

“Our relationship with Community Action has played a pivotal role in our ability to have an active presence,” McGarrity explained.

The collaboration between Legal Aid and Community Action began in the spring of 2018 when Legal Aid launched a virtual office at the Wooster site, allowing community members to apply for assistance or meet with their attorney by video call. While the virtual office is one way staff is available to the public, the firm recognizes that not everyone is comfortable using modern technology.

“The virtual office was a great start, but we knew it was important to have staff present in person,” McGarrity said. “We want to send a strong message to Wayne County that we are available, invested and committed to the community.”

Legal Aid began offering a monthly clinic at Community Action last year, which features a presentation on common legal topics followed by a chance for attendees who qualify to meet with an attorney. The organization decided to increase staff presence this year by offering weekly office hours where community members can meet face-to-face with an attorney.
