Program Spotlight

mum and baby Volunteer Advocacy Legal Unit
The Volunteer Legal Advocacy Unit (VALU) was established in 1991 through the joint efforts of The Junior League of Youngstown, and the Domestic Relations Court of Mahoning County and is a program of Community Legal Aid and the Volunteer Legal Services Program (VLSP). The focus of the program is to assist victims of domestic violence through the court process of obtaining a Civil Protection Order (CPO).  After completing 12 hours of required training, volunteers will directly participate in the legal process with the victim and play an important role in keeping the victims safe and preventing future abuse.  The VALU office is located at Domestic Relations court and volunteers will work closely with domestic relations court personnel, Community Legal Aid staff, and other volunteers.   The VALU program is unique because of its use of  lay volunteers in the court system and is the only one of its kind in the state of Ohio.

Community Legal Aid is seeking additional volunteers for VALU. Volunteers are trained and supported by VLSP staff with training done twice a year. The VALU office is open from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm with flexible scheduling to accommodate work or class commitments. Volunteers can also obtain internship credits for their participation.

For more information or to become involved, please call Jackie Tate, VLSP Paralegal, at (330) 983-2599.
