McGarrity thanks bar volunteers

Gearing up for Law Week, we’re thankful for our volunteers

Community Legal Aid has long enjoyed a partnership with our local bar associations. From our referral process, to collaborations programs with local law students, to jointly working on events - these programs exemplify how when we work together, we can accomplish more than we could alone.

As Law Week approaches, we reflect on a more subtle collaboration - the individual attorneys who give their time to do pro bono work for our clients. While this may seem like a more informal way of joining forces, our Volunteer Legal Services Program (VLSP) wouldn’t exist without it.

Last year alone, we had over 200 active volunteers who took pro bono cases to help those in need. Clients who otherwise would have not had any help were able to receive assistance in a broad spectrum of issues, including:

  • Safety from domestic violence
  • Financial peace of mind through bankruptcy or debt alleviation
  • Estate planning and wills to prepare for the future
  • Improvement to housing conditions or resolving discrimination issues

...and so much more!

If this weren’t impressive enough, you, our volunteers, the economic impact of your work soared above $2.2 million in benefits to our clients. That’s incredible.

So, as we look forward to Law Week and honoring our Volunteers of the Year, we want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you who donated your time and talents last year to help our clients. We truly couldn’t do it without you.

We also want to invite those of you who have not yet been introduced to VLSP to learn more about how you can get involved. You can learn more by visiting our website at www.communitylegalaid.org/vlsp. Our staff is happy to talk and answer any questions you may have at any time.
