New Food Stamp Rules

Able-bodied adults without dependents may need to meet a work requirement in order to receive food stamps. Read below to see if these new rules apply to you.

New Work Rules:
Able-bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs) must participate:
  • in the county agency’s work experience program (WEP), or
  • for 80 hours per month (averaging 20 hours per week) in any combination:
    • paid or unpaid employment, and/or
    • the county agency’s work program.
If this new work requirement applies to you:
  • Your food stamps will continue as long as you meet the new work requirement and you are otherwise eligible for benefits.
  • If you don’t comply with the new work rules, you may be sanctioned or become ineligible. DJFS can decide that you have good cause for not complying.
Exemptions:
This new work rule doesn’t apply if you meet one of the following
  • age 17 or younger; pregnant; age 50+
  • mentally or physically unfit to work as determined by DJFS or medical professional;
  • receive benefits with someone who is age 17 or younger;
  • live in one of sixteen counties in southern Ohio;
  • receive Ohio Works First, unemployment compensation, SSI or other disability benefits;
  • applying for SSI or unemployment compensation;
  • responsible for the care of an incapacitated person who lives with you;
  • regularly participate in a drug or alcoholic treatment and rehabilitation program; or
  • enrolled at least half-time in a recognized school, training program, college or university.
New Reporting Rules:
  • If you meet an exemption, contact your DJFS caseworker.
  • If you don’t meet an exemption, contact DJFS immediately. Ask what you can do to comply with the requirement.
  • If the new work requirement applies to you, you have a duty to report if your hours are reduced. If you currently work at least 20 hours per week or 80 hours per month, you must report to DJFS if your hours fall below 20 hours per week or 80 hours per month. You must report this change by the 10th day of the month following the month in which the change first occurred. For example, if your work hours are reduced in June, you must report no later than July 10th.
