Community Legal Aid Services is the primary provider of free civil legal representation to low-income and elderly residents of central northeast Ohio. Our mission is to serve the poor by securing justice, protecting rights, promoting measures for their assistance and providing quality representation.

Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Advocacy Director to support the provision of legal services for eligible clients and for researching issues that have an impact on the law affecting those clients. Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Research legal issues related to specific fact situations for briefing
  • Research regulations governing clients and analyzing their effect
  • Assist in preparation of selected documents.
  • Copy and file documents of a legal and confidential nature.
  • Proofread legal documents and other documents advocating a particular position [White papers].
  • Research public records.
  • May be asked to interview clients to gather specific facts as required by the case.
  •  Research availability of community social service referrals for clients.
  • Such other tasks as may be assigned by the Student Intern Supervisor. [See examples attached]

Job Qualifications:

  •  Demonstrated interest in and sensitivity to the legal needs of the poor as well as motivation to improve the condition of the poor.
  •  Personal characteristics include: excellent interpersonal skills, first-rate oral and written communications skills, professional attitude, discretion, diplomacy and tact, ability to relate to professionals, strong analytical and organizational skills, and high dependability.
  •  Proficient in Microsoft Word and Internet research tools.
  •  Ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable.

Task Examples:

  • CLAS represents people in public housing and subject to the rules of the Public Housing Authority. Researching the rules for the 8 counties where we operate and determining a best practice might be one task.
  • CLAS clients are sometimes asked for information governed by the Public Information Systems Act. One assignment might be searching that act and best practices.
  • CLAS represents people who file poverty affidavits to waive court fees. Researching the practices of other states in these matters, often called applications for indigent status, might be one task.
  • CLAS represents many mentally ill clients and developing best practices for requests for accommodation from housing authorities and other agencies might be a task.
