Administrative Assistant / Accounting and HR Coordinator

Community Legal Aid is a private non-profit law firm which bridges the gap between poverty and justice for low income and elderly residents of central northeast Ohio.  We concentrate our efforts on legal work that makes a difference in the lives of poor people, providing civil legal representation to promote economic security, preserve housing, protect safety and health and ensure access to justice.  Operating throughout central northeast Ohio, we are the primary provider of free civil legal representation to low-income and elderly residents.  


Job Summary:

Responsible for the day to day functions of accounts payable and payroll. Provide periodic assistance in preparation of various reports for internal and external users.


Job Description:

  • Ensures the timely and accurate processing of bi-weekly payroll

  • Processes accounts payable following established guidelines

  • In conjunction with the Accounting/Human Resource Manager  prepares various reports for internal and external users including regulatory agencies

  • Performs other duties as requested by the Executive Director or Chief Financial Officer



  • Accuracy and attention to detail a must

  • A professional attitude with good interpersonal skills including the ability to exercise diplomacy and tact

  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of personalities and be strong, self-motivated, trustworthy and dependable.

  • Experience with ADP for payroll and/or Sage 50 (Peachtree) accounting software is highly desirable.

  • Thorough working knowledge of all computer programs (i.e. Microsoft Word & Excel) and office machines (i.e. copier and postage) used by the firm and ability to learn new programs and machines as required

  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a collaborative work environment

  • Must have an associate’s degree in an appropriate field or three years work experience with comparable responsibilities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must be able to attend meetings and/or other functions at various locations within the service area

  • Ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable


Reports to:    Accounting/Human Resource Manager   

Salary:    Based on Experience.  Excellent working environment and benefit package.

Our mission is to serve the poor by securing justice, protecting rights, promoting measures for their assistance and providing quality representation.

Job Description

  • Provides comprehensive, high quality legal services to eligible clients in civil cases in accordance with organizational policies and the Code of Professional Responsibility.

  • Creates an effective and efficient office environment to support the provision of high quality legal services.

  • Establishes and maintains effective working relations with client groups, community organizations and the state justice community.

  • Pursues and maintains personal professional development and contributes to the professional development of others who serve clients and the client community as a whole.

  • Perform other related duties as required.

Job Qualifications

  • Personal characteristics include:  professional attitude, excellent persuasive and interpersonal skills, use of diplomacy and tact.

  • Demonstrated interest in and sensitivity to the legal needs of the poor as well as motivation to improve the condition of the poor.    

  • Admitted to the practice of law in Ohio.  

  • Basic competence in computer programs utilized by the firm.

  • Experience in the areas of family law is highly desirable as is a basic understanding of bankruptcy, foreclosure and tax law.

  • Ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable.

Reports To: Managing Attorney

Salary: $39,609 + DOE.  Excellent working environment and benefit package.
