Position Announcement VLSP Paralegal # 1501

Location: Akron Office


Community Legal Aid is the primary provider of free civil legal representation to low-income and elderly residents of central northeast Ohio. Our mission is to serve the poor by securing justice, protecting rights, promoting measures for their assistance and providing quality representation.


Job Description:

The VLSP Paralegal will, under the supervision of the Office Manager, assist in the provision of comprehensive, high quality legal services to eligible clients in civil cases in accordance with organizational policies and the Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct. Although duties may include any or all of the following, it is expected that the VLSP Paralegal will primarily be involved in client eligibility determinations, pro se assistance, professional support and team participation and administration.


  1. Client Eligibility: The VLSP Paralegal will have primary responsibility for timely and accurately determining client eligibility for the vast majority of clients seeking assistance from Legal Aid, including establishment of client files in the client database, conflict checking and other screening,

  2. Pro Se Assistance: The VLSP Paralegal will screen cases according to established criteria and distribute relevant community legal education material as appropriate and will assist clinic participants and clients in the preparation of routine legal forms,

  3. Volunteer Recruitment, Support and Recognition: The VLSP Paralegal will be involved in the recruitment and recognition of volunteer lawyers who provide pro bono or reduced fee representation to low income clients. The VLSP Paralegal will have a primary role in the maintenance of volunteer relationships, serving as the primary point of contact for volunteers and ensuring that they are well supported and that they feel that their time is well spent. The VLSP Paralegal will understand and comply with specific regulations concerning tracking and documentation of volunteer efforts and timekeeping.

  4. Professional Support: The VLSP Paralegal will be called upon to provide support in a wide variety of civil cases, including interviewing and screening of clients, working with clients to gather relevant documents, drafting of letters, affidavits, basic legal pleadings and other documents, tracking case status and ensuring that deadlines are met, and otherwise assisting attorneys,

  5. Community Advocacy: The VLSP Paralegal will play a role in furthering the firm’s advocacy agenda in the community through service on local or statewide committees or boards and by establishing new and maintaining existing community collaborations.

  6. Project Management: The VLSP Paralegal may be asked to assume a leadership role in management of specific projects. Such role will include developing project plans, coordination and oversight of efforts of staff and volunteers, ensuring that required data is gathered, and preparation of reports.

  7. Team Participation and Administration: The VLSP Paralegal will be an active participant in participate in planning, documenting and evaluating the work of the team. The VLSP Paralegal will play a central role in grant compliance and report preparation. The VLSP Paralegal will also be assigned office administration duties such as maintenance of escrow account, ordering of supplies, reception duties, etc.

  8. Other duties as required: The VLSP Paralegal will also perform other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest in and sensitivity to the legal needs of the poor as well as motivation to improve the condition of the poor,

  • Ability to represent Community Legal Aid and to advocate for its mission,

  • Professional attitude excellent interpersonal skills, dependability, and a high desire to contribute to an effective and collaborative work environment,

  • Independent worker with excellent analytical and organizational skills who can think systemically, who has the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines, and who can plan projects, manage their execution, and document results,

  • First rate oral and written skills,

  • Thorough working knowledge of all computer programs and office machines used by the firm and ability to learn new programs and machines as required,

  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours to suit the needs of clients and the firm, specifically the ability to work into the early evening to conduct intake screening by telephone or at clinics and possible work at a Saturday morning clinic,

  • Although not absolutely required, a college degree is preferable,

  • Notary public or ability to become one immediately following hiring, and

  • Ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable.


Reports to: Managing Attorney

Salary: $22,402.00 + DOE. Excellent working environment and benefit package.

Administrative Assistant

Location: Akron

protecting rights, promoting measures for their assistance and providing quality representation.


Job Description: The Administrative Assistant will provide support for the Executive Office

with emphasis on development and communications functions. Duties and responsibilities may

include, but are not limited to:

  • Support for annual giving campaign including donation processing and donor acknowledgement; maintenance of excellent donor relations.

  • Assist in development, writing, editing, and proofreading of brochures, publications, newsletters news releases and other materials; posting to website, Facebook and Twitter

  • Scheduling, arranging and supporting special events such as team meetings, continuing legal education trainings, donor receptions, community education presentations, clinics and reporting and compliance calendars.

  • Support grant writing activities including production of grant applications and reports as well as maintenance of excellent relationships with funders

  • Support for members of management team, including the Executive Director.

  • Support client services by fielding and processing questions and complaints.

  • Support Board of Directors by maintaining files, scheduling meetings, taking minutes, production of materials.

  • Assist in human resources function by posting job openings, acting as liaison to candidates, supporting hiring committees, maintenance of files, and entrance and exit processes.

  • Representation of Legal Aid at community events and meetings as requested.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Job Qualifications include demonstrated interest in and sensitivity to the legal needs of the poor as well as motivation to improve the condition of low income people, excellent interpersonal skills, first-rate oral and written communications skills, professional attitude, discretion, diplomacy and tact, ability to relate to professionals, strong analytical and organizational skills, high dependability, demonstrated ability to learn, adapt and grow, experience accurately and precisely maintaining a database, thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, & Publisher; Adobe Suite; Google Apps for Business; and other computer programs and office machines used by the firm, as well as the ability to learn new programs and machines as required. The ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable as is prior experience with donor database software. Flexible work hours may be required for specific events, and local travel within central northeast Ohio is likely.
